As with dance, so with juggling—the moment that the performer finishes the routine, their act ceases to exist beyond the memory of the audience. There is no permanent record of what transpired, so studying the ancient roots of juggling is fraught with difficulty. Using the records that do exist, juggling appears to have emerged around the world in cultures independent of one another in the ancient past. Paintings in Egypt from 2000 BCE show jugglers engaged in performance. Stories from the island nation of Tonga place juggling’s creation with their goddess of the underworld—a figure who has guarded a cave since time immemorial. Juggling games and rituals are pervasive in isolated Inuit cultures in northern Canada and Greenland. Though the earliest representation of juggling is 4,000 years old, the practice is surely much older—in the same way that humans were doubtlessly singing and dancing long before the first bone flute was created. This book is an attempt to catalogue this tangible history of juggling in human culture. It is the story of juggling, represented in art and writing from around the world, across time. Although much has been written about modern jugglers–specific performers, their props, and their routines–little has been said about those who first developed the craft. As juggling enters a golden age in the internet era, Juggling From Antiquity to the Middle Ages offers a look into the past—to the origins of our art form.

"Thom Wall is a rare scholar-practitioner in the field of juggling. The world needs more people like Wall who can bridge what is often a wide gap between the thoughtful study of the history of an art and the performance of the art itself. In this work, Wall does an excellent job of interacting with primary sources as well as covering the global breadth of juggling history. Like the skilled juggler he is in real life, Wall found a varied collection of texts from history about juggling and tossed them up into a beautiful pattern that displays the wonder of this mesmerizing art form."

Juggling From Antiquity to the Middle Ages the forgotten history of throwing and catching eBook Thom Wall Reviews

  • Thom Wall is a rare scholar-practitioner in the field of juggling. The world needs more people like Wall who can bridge what is often a wide gap between the thoughtful study of the history of an art and the performance of the art itself. In this work, Wall does an excellent job of interacting with primary sources as well as covering the global breadth of juggling history. Like the skilled juggler he is in real life, Wall found a varied collection of texts from history about juggling and tossed them up into a beautiful pattern that displays the wonder of this mesmerizing art form.
  • I enjoyed all of the juggling history tidbits. The only thing I could say is that I had to read it in chunks rather than long sessions just because organizing by geography of ancient civilization could be a little jarring and trying to read more than 2-3 sections at a time was hard to process. That being said, I can't really say that organizing the information in a different way would be better.
  • Thom Wall's history of juggling is a fun, authoritatvie, and informative read! This is history writing at its best. The author is scrupulous in researching the history of juggling in countries and cultures the world over. And he also has a delightfully humurous take on some of the claims of juggling and jugglers that I love because he himself is a juggler and entertainer! My favorite picture in the book, which is generous in photographs, is of a lady on an ancient Greek amphora. She is juggling while her goose watches! I have a kinship with her, because my cat watches me as I juggle at home! That is a huge takeaway from this book, how people everywhere and in all times have found joy in tossing things in the air!
Thank you, Thom Wall, for this joyous book!
  • Thom Wall’s summary of the origins and developments of juggling in multiple cultures through the Middle Ages is the first of its kind for our community of skillful throwers and catchers—a well cited, scholarly survey of what we know about the origins of our craft. This is an important book for anyone invested in juggling and a fun, insightful read for anyone interested in circus, juggling, history, or performance.
  • This book is just a delight. If you like history or juggling (and especially if you love the history of juggling!) this book is for you. Wall has meticulously researched the evolution of juggling around the world across the ages, but at no point does the text become inaccessible. The joy Wall feels for this field is clear on every page--it's contagious.
  • Thom has put together the definitive history book on juggling. Through his dedicated research and delightful story-telling, Thom will help you learn how juggling evolved around the world. These stories are certainly of great interest to any juggler or fan of circus arts, but even non-jugglers will enjoy and appreciate this history. Go back in time and enjoy learning about jugglers in ancient cultures, see photos from around the world depicting early “malabaristas” and “jongleurs,” and let Thom bring you into the very old and exciting world of throwing and catching.
  • A truly wonderful book that breaks down the history of juggling by region. Wall does a phenomenal job of not only covering the historical roots of juggling in various areas of the world, but also expertly citing his sources. In the process of studying the various origins, he also uncovered a fair deal of juggling history that has not been widely known previously, which he documents here. Between the historical relevance and the highly entertaining footnotes, this is an absolutely amazing read. Highly recommended.
  • Recent years have seen a publication of many books on juggling history — but all of them cover the modern performing period from about the mid 1800s to the present. Thom Wall's book is the first to cover the forgotten history of juggling, around the world, from Egyptian tomb paintings to the travelling jugglers of Malabar. As an academic myself, one of my pet peeves about other juggling histories is that they often state facts without citing sources, rendering them useless for serious scholarship. I was delighted to find that Thom has conscientiously and comprehensively identified the original sources for all of his claims. But better than that, he's written an engaging and inspiring book that should delight jugglers and non-jugglers alike.

Best-selling author and spiritual teacher Pema Chödrön shares life-changing practices for living with wisdom, confidence, and integrity amidst confusing situations and uncertain times.

We live in difficult times. Life so often seems like a turbulent river threatening to drown us and destroy our world. Why, then, shouldn’t we cling to the certainty of the comfortable—to our deep-seated habits and familiar ways? Because, Pema Chödrön teaches, that kind of fear-based clinging keeps us from the infinitely more powerful experience of being fully alive. The teachings she presents here—known as the “Three Commitments”—provide a treasure trove of wisdom for learning to step right into the unknown, to completely and fearlessly embrace the groundlessness of being human. When we do, we begin to see not only how much better it feels to live an openhearted life, but we find that we begin to naturally and more effectively reach out to help and heal all those around us.

"I have a number of Pema Chodron books, and this is one of the best. There is something about the simplicity of the message--delivered in few words, but with maximum impact. Some call it a quick read; I disagree. Each sentence is powerful, each chapter to be read and re-read. I have passed this book on to my husband, and we have both read it several times. I have also come back here to buy more copies for friends, family, and co-workers. We all go through difficult and confusing times, and we often resist change as "bad." Pema's reassuring voice lets us know that we are not alone; that we all suffer at one time or another because we try to grasp at permanency, and often wish that things were different from how they currently are. The solution, both simple and difficult, is to live in the present moment, without pre-conceptions, and to let go of our story line about what is "good" or "bad" for us at any given moment. So I read, and re-read, and slowly--the message sinks in. The chapter on compassion is one of the most powerful things I have ever read. I think I have given away 10 copies of this book already."

  • I read this book because my life is so full of uncertainty and change right now. I am unemployed, and the anxiety of not being able to pay the rent, the car loan, the bills is incredibly stressful. Pema's words do not allow me to escape the essential problems of my life, but to find the courage to act without the overwhelming sense of fear. Her words are like a soothing balm. Instead of just fear, she has helped me to see that I can take this as a time of deep spiritual growth - in a very real, honest way. I will read this book over and over again.
  • This the first book I have read related to Buddhist philosophy. I have read books on mindfulness but this is different. I went to a Buddhist service and it was recommend by a guest speaker who also is a well known author. I am reading a little bit at a time and trying to take the time to understand and absorb it. It is pretty easy to read. I appreciate how the author deals with the everyday issues that we all face. She makes you think about things you have always accepted in your life and if this is the best way to think. It may not be! I recommend it to anyone who wants to think about their tendency to worry, feel anxious/depressed and feel like they need to control everything in their life. I know I have a long way to go here, but am making the first steps.
  • This book is one of those I can imagine myself rereading over and over for the rest of my life. I also can see myself recommending so much of it to future therapy clients. There are so many nuggets of wisdom offered either as ancient teachings or the author’s own person anecdotes. Each section is easily read as a stand alone chapter or as a progression of all previous chapters so the reader can be reminded of what they need based on the subject. My favorite aspect we’re the “guided meditations” at the end of each chapter. I loved reading the theory but the suggestions of how to put it into practice is invaluable. Guaranteed my meditation practice and hopefully my entire life view will be changed by this book.
  • Pema Chödrön introduces this section by describing the first of the Three Commitments, traditionally called the Pratimoksha Vow, the foundation for personal liberation. “This is a commitment to doing our best to not cause harm with our actions or words or thoughts, a commitment to being good to each other. It provides a structure within which we learn to work with our thoughts and emotions, and to refrain from speaking or acting out of confusion.” She edifies the reader to understand the purpose of the precepts as a means to get at something deeper, known as outer renunciation. She elaborates by describing fixed identity or “ego clinging” as the cause of our suffering, providing practices to cultivate mindfulness, paying attention to all details of your life.

“The first commitment is a vow to know your triggers, a vow that whatever it takes, you’ll compassionately acknowledge when you’re hooked by the eight worldly concerns-or indeed, hooked by anything.” She completes the first section by emphasizing that awakening is not a process of building ourselves up, rather it’s a process of letting go.

Part Two The Second Commitment Committing to Take Care of One Another
In the next section, the author lays out the second commitment traditionally known as the Bodhisattva Vow; a commitment dedicating our lives to keeping our hearts and minds open and to nurturing our compassion with the longing to ease the suffering of the world. Ani Pema describes the second commitment as stepping further into groundlessness as a source of awakening rather than a source of dread, as a path to fearlessness rather than a threat to survival. In this section She introduces the reader to Tonglen meditation, teaching the four stages as a core practice for cultivating courage and compassion, thus accessing our interconnectedness with all beings.

Part Three The Third Commitment Committing to Embrace the World Just as It Is
In part three, Pema Chödrön presents what is traditionally known as the Samaya Vow, the commitment to not reject anything, surrendering to life as it is. The author states the following, “Simply put, the practice at this stage is to turn toward your experience, all of it, and never turn away.” The Samaya Vow, engaging with the simplicity of life just as it comes, is taken after the cultivation of the first two commitments; much of which involves minimizing our tendency to pin labels and preconceptions, views and opinions, on everything we perceive.

    Part Four Concluding Words
At the conclusion of the book, Pema Chödrön leaves the reader with the following question “Are you ready to make a commitment?” In closing, we are encouraged to maintain these commitments, thus embarking on the journey of embracing the positive groundlessness of life for the sake of our loved ones, our enemies, and ourselves.

Dangerous Beauty edition by JT Geissinger Romance eBooks Reviews

  • Get ready for Naz and Eva to steal your heart!!! Eva is running from her past. Nasir has been sent to watch her by her "husband". There is only one problem. She does not want to be found. Instead of finding a spoiled, rich socialite wife, Naz finds Eva to be a woman that he is falling in love with. Eva is not going to cower, she is a fighter! I loved her character and add the protectiveness of Naz and you have a winning combination! The only down side is this book is a duet--so be prepared for one doozy of a cliffhanger.! J. T. Geissinger is a brilliant storyteller. She draws you into her characters' lives and you do not want to leave their world. 5 amazing stars!
  • The Dangerous Beauty series is a spinoff of the Bad Habit series, where we first met Barney, personal bodyguard and former special ops military soldier, whose real name is Nasir or Naz. In this first installment of the new series, Naz is on assignment in Mexico for Metrix Security. His company is hired to watch and report on the wife of a Russian mobster, which sounds easy enough to Naz, until he actually meets the woman and realizes it’s anything but. He doesn’t have a clue about what he’s really gotten himself into, and he’ll soon discover that things aren’t always what they seem or what you’ve been led to believe. Evalina Ivanova, aka Eva, is a woman in hiding from a very dangerous and cruel man, and she has no idea that he knows where she is. Her beauty, brains, humor, and survival instincts make her irresistible to Naz, who knows it’s a bad idea to be in contact with her. Naz and Eva have so much chemistry, and their humorous bantering will have you chuckling throughout the story. As Naz gets to know Eva, his assignment changes and becomes personal, and he knows he will protect this woman at all costs. This romantic suspense has all of the mystery, action, danger, and steamy encounters that will keep you turning the pages. But, beware, there is a cliffhanger at the end. I am a huge J.T. Geissinger fan and am impatient to read book two and find out where Naz and Eva end up next!
  • Do you ever read one of those books and find yourself so lost in the story that you never look down to see how much is left in the book? Yeah, that was me with this BEAUTIFUL story! All of a sudden, I found myself gasping at the last page. Naz and Eva had me spellbound and I was completely wrapped up in their story. I LOVED the banter between this couple. They were fun and funny and truly enjoyed each other's company. J.T. Geissinger gave me ALL. THE. FEELS and left me with a book hangover of epic proportions.
  • I absolutely loved this book! The feelings that Eva and Naz have for each other and their struggles to get together draw you in and keep you rooting for them through all the danger, lies, and little bits of fun. This book gives you all the feels and keeps you reading way into the night to find out what will happen to Naz and Eva and if they will get their HEA. Great first in series book! Can't wait for the next one!
  • I love this author, and always pre-order her books. That said; I hate finding out its a cliffhanger while I'm reading the cliffhanger!
I just feel its a cash grab. I'd rather be told its a 3 part and then make the decision to hit purchase with full knowledge. Whether it was the author or that decided to withhold this information.....not fair.
  • Arrrgh! This is an auto 1-click author for me, which means I didn’t bother to read the blurb. So it wasn’t until I was nearing the end that I realized this was part 1 of a duet and I was going to have to wait until August for the conclusion. Yeah, that cliffhanger was especially painful, lol. Note that while this is a spinoff of Wicked Sexy and there’s also a connection to the author’s Bad Habit series, you don’t need to have read any of the other books to enjoy this one.

Eva and Naz are great characters; they were both smart, caring and protective, and I loved the back and forth banter they had going on. They both also had a lot of pain in their pasts and I could really feel the connection they formed in spite of all the secrets between them. There weren’t a lot of secondary characters, but Wicked Sexy fans will love the appearances of Connor and Tabby in the later part of the book, while Eva’s ex provides a looming threat that keeps the tension high.

A slow burn story that was hilarious and heartbreaking by turns, there was still plenty of chemistry and all that suspense to keep me engaged in the story as I waited for all those shoes I knew were out there to drop, even before I realized there was going to be a cliffhanger at the end. How many days until August?! 5+ stars

    B2B Kelly
  • JT's books are my automatic one-clicks! And I've been waiting for its release since it was announced. Coming into it knowing it would have a cliffhanger and was just only the beginning of Naz and Eva’s journey, I honestly did not expect so many wow factors and surprising twists and turns as in JT’s other standalones. Because I know she would save the BEST for last ❤️ Some of the unfavorable reviews I’ve seen earlier might have been about this. That being said, I think it was beautifully written as always, how Naz and Eva developed their feelings for each other was crafted naturally. Naz was honorable, gentlemanly, and caring, whereas Eve was sweet, intelligent, and courageous. This book was just the beginning of their rocky journey together and I can’t wait to see their next adventures toward their happy ending ❤️

Thank you JT for another beautiful book. It’s been a while since I read your last one, and I just realized how much I’ve missed your words. Now August... please come faster ☺️

Side note I LOVE how Tabby is still the baddest badass with a wacky fashion sense and a Hello Kitty craze. And the love advice Connor had given Naz was just too funny and unexpected 😂 Anyway, I cannot get enough of this couple! Time to read Wicked Sexy again ❤️❤️❤️

From Phyllis Reynolds Naylor comes this unabridged recording of her Newbery Award-winning tale of adventure, courage and love, the timeless and moving story of a dog in trouble and the young boy who would save him.

Eleven-year-old Marty Preston loves to spend time up in the hills behind his home near Friendly, West Virginia. Sometimes he takes his .22 rifle to shoot cans from the rail fence. Other times he goes up early in the morning just to sit and watch the fox and deer.

But one summer Sunday, Marty comes across something different on the road just past the old Shiloh schoolhouse, a young beagle, and that's where the trouble begins.

What do you do when a dog you suspect is being mistreated runs away and comes to you? When the man who owns the dog has a gun? This is Marty's problem, and it is one he will have to face alone. Soon Marty will have to put his courage on the line, discovering in the process that it is not always easy to separate right from wrong. Sometimes, however, a boy will do almost anything to save a dog.

"This was one I read a long with my nieces, and we all loved it. I mean it's a story of a boy and a dog, what could be better? I liked Marty, I found him to be a relatable narrator, which is something that is very important, I think, especially, in books for younger, and particularly middle-school readers. It's a story not just for kids, but adults too, they will become just as invested and interested in Marty and Shiloh's story, especially as I feel Marty learns a few of life's lessons and to some extent growing up as well. Highly recommended!!"

  • I read this with my 2 boys who are 11 and 9. They loved this book and the story of Shiloh. Once we would start reading at night, they didn't want to stop. They are usually pretty egger to get reading time over with, so that tells you something about this story.
  • I purchased this book for my fifth grade granddaughter. She is an avid reader - loved it (loves dogs) - finished it the first day.
  • Shared with the local Bright Red Bookshelf as listed on the MENSA reading list!
  • I once had a dog that my dad brought home for my little brother by 8 years. He would never get me a dog no matter how I asked, but got my little brother one soon as he mentioned it. The dog imprinted on me and i took care of it. Bought its food. Played with it. Ran him. The whole nine yards. I worked hard, just like Marty, for that dog. Unfortunately, my dad forced me to get rid of him just 3 months in. Glad to see a story that resonated and turned out good.
  • I purchased this book for my 11 year old grandson. He needed a book to read at school when his work was finished. He is captivated by the story. Everyday he comes home from school telling what is happened in the book. He even told me that his teacher asked him to stop doing his work so fast just so he could read Shiloh. Now that's a great book, one that you can hardly wait to get back to reading!
  • My 8 years old son loves the books. They make for a really cool gift for a kid who enjoys reading.
  • My daughters read this as a requirement in third grade and loved it. I surprised them with the book one day after I picked them up from school and they both became quite excited. Can we say bookworms? Haha.
